What are fractures and sprains of the wrist?
Broken finger and thumb bones are common hand injuries, usually resulting from direct trauma or a fall.
Similarly to a broken hand, a sprain can occur when a fall has torn or damaged a ligament in the hand.
A simple x-ray should be sufficient, however if the picture isn't clear sometimes ultrasound or MRI may be required.
If a hand and wrist fracture is diagnosed and treated early, along with rehabilitation exercises, the recovery is usually good.
Surgery may occasionally be needed if the break is particularly bad or inadequate therapy and treatment leaves the joint stiff and painful.
Sprains may recover well from resting, using ice, a compression dressing and keeping the hand elevated.
If it hasn't healed or pain and stiffness is worsening, it is worth getting checked over by a professional.
