What is laser eye surgery?
The cornea is reshaped to correct myopia, hypermetropia, astigmatism and presbyopia using a laser which removes corneal tissue with precision. Millions of people around the world have undergone laser eye surgery to correct their eyesight.
What does it involve?
There are different options available: LASIK, LASEK and PRK/TransPRK
- LASIK (Laser-Assisted In-situ Keratomileusis) This is performed in two stages with two different lasers. One to create a thin flap on the surface of the cornea, and another to reshape the cornea underneath. The protective flap is then replaced back over the treated area.
- LASEK (Laser-Assisted Sub-Epithelial Keratomileusis) The clear skin (epithelium) covering the cornea is loosened and moved aside to allow the laser to reshape the cornea underneath. The skin is then rolled over and replaced.
- PRK/TransPRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy) This involves removal of the skin (epithelium) which is then allowed to grow back naturally.

What type of laser eye surgery will I receive?
You will require a thorough assessment and examination of your eyes to determine if you are suitable for surgery. You will also need to be at least 18 years of age with a stable glasses/contact lens prescription to be considered for laser eye surgery. Mr Patel will discuss your suitability and treatment plan with you following your initial consultation
What happens on the day of laser eye surgery?
Your scans will be re-checked, and your treatment plan confirmed. Anaesthetic eye drops will be placed on the eye(s) to be treated and you will be given specific instructions to follow depending on the type of treatment planned.
Laser eye surgery takes no more than a few seconds (slightly longer if undergoing LASIK). A protective contact lens may be placed on the eye afterwards and you will receive eye drops to instil for a few weeks after the surgery. A follow-up appointment will be arranged with you before you leave.
