What is platelet rich plasma therapy?

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy is a medical procedure that utilizes the body’s own blood platelets to help speed the healing of injured tissues.

An analogy to compare with is if you have fallen and cut your leg, a scab forms as it heals. It is the platelets in the blood that form the scab and eventually the scab lifts off leaving healthy tissue underneath. The principle is the same for platelet rich plasma.

How does platelet rich plasma therapy work?

It is a safe, non-surgical procedure that involves drawing a small amount of the patient's blood and then separating out the platelet-rich plasma from the rest of the blood components.

Your consultant hand surgeon will then re-injected the PRP into the injured area to stimulate healing and regeneration, often resulting in improved function and decreased pain.
